What is DBT?

I am intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and a Certified DBT Clinician by the Linehan Board of Certification.  DBT is an evidence-based treatment for teens and adults who have difficulties managing emotions and behaviors.  It emphasizes learning skills to replace behaviors that do not work, and to address problems that cause difficulties in how we function in life.  DBT maintains that while you may not be responsible for all your problems, you are responsible for finding the solutions- and we will formulate a plan for those solutions together. It also requires that you accept yourself fully as you are in this moment while also making the necessary changes to meet your goals.  Wouldn't you rather learn to effectively deal with stressful situations without being caught up and swept away by them?

As an adherent Dialectical Behavior Therapist, I will help you apply the concepts of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness to the specific issues and challenges that are bringing you into counseling. I provide DBT phone coaching, which provides in-the-moment coaching on the skills learned in session during crisis moments.  I'm also on a weekly DBT Consultation Team which is an integral part of adherent DBT to ensure I am providing the most effective treatment by DBT standards.  Skills groups are provided by local DBT agencies that I work closely with.   If this sounds like what you’re looking for, I hope you’ll contact me for an appointment today.

We would determine after our initial meetings what level of treatment is best for you or your teen.  Some clients would benefit from a full program, while others will benefit from something less intensive.

Here is a great video describing exactly what DBT is all about:
